Dead Leaf Echo – Beyond Desire

Ein Album, das schon 2017 erschien, aber aus zwei Gründen hier vorgestellt werden kann: Erstens erschien es Anfang März 2018 dank Reptile Music erstmals in Deutschland. Zweitens ist das sowieso unerheblich, da die Platte auch durchaus Ende der 80er-/Anfang der 90er-Jahre des letzten Jahrhunderts hätte erscheinen können und jedem Freude bereiten dürfte, der die lärmenden Gitarrenklänge von Swervedriver schätzt oder am verhuschten Gesang von Moose Gefallen findet.

Dead Leaf Echo sind in Brooklyn / New York zuhause. Das Quartett, das seinen Namen Vladimir Nabokovs Roman Lolita entlieh, besteht aus LG Galleon (Gitarre, Keyboard, Gesang), Ana Breton (Gitarre, Keyboards, Gesang), Steve Schwadron (Bass) und Kevin Kahawai (Schlagzeug). Der Sound des Albums wurde unter anderem von Guy Fixsen mitgestaltet, der auch schon für My Bloody Valentine und Slowdive tätig war.

Everyone wants their favorite bands to progress while still sounding like themselves. For me, Beyond.Desire really demonstrates the brilliance of Dead Leaf Echo as well as their progress as a unit. Utilizing “Desire” as a connective tissue on the album, Dead Leaf Echo produce a unified vision most bands can never achieve. With themes of desperation, desire, love, loss, and so much more snaking their way through the extensively varied aural landscapes, Beyond.Desire is a masterpiece of blended post-punk, dreampop, and shoegaze that juxtaposes experimentation alongside dreamy single worthy tracks. ‘Lemonheart’ is shimmering and densely textured, more akin to their older material than some of these other songs. ‘Beyond Desire’ is a stunning but slow, spacey ride, the kind of tune Slowdive is known for. It’s miles above the other songs in my estimation, and I wish Ana would sing more often (I say the same thing about Slowdive and Rachel Goswell). (Echoes And Dust)
