Pale Waves - Unwanted

10 Fakten zum neunen Album von Pale Waves:

1. Auch bei den Pale Waves sorgte eine ausgefallene Tournee für mehr Zeit im Studio: Ihr drittes Album „Unwanted“ erscheint 18 Monate nach „Who Am I?“. 

2. Mit der Veröffentlichung des Albums am 12. August ging es für das Quartett auch wieder auf Tournee. 38 Konzerte sind im Vereinigten Königreich, in den USA und in Japan geplant, Termine auf dem europäischen Festland gibt es bis jetzt nicht. Für die Live-Auftritte wollten die Pale Waves mehr Gitarren, weniger Synthesizer und temporeichere Songs für „Unwanted“ und gingen mit dieser Prämisse ins Studio.

3. Dafür suchte man sich einen in Rock und Punk erfahrenen Produzenten und ging gemeinsam mit Zakk Cervini (Bring Me The Horizon, 5 Seconds Of Summer, Blink 182, Good Charlotte) in die MDDN Studios in Burbank, Kalifornien.

4. „Unwanted“ bietet in der regulären Version 13 Songs, die 39:05 Minuten laufen. Die „Antidote Edition“ liefert zusätzlich vier Songs aus der sogenannten „Antidote Live Session“. Da die Pale Waves auch gern einmal eine Coverversion veröffentlichen („22“ von Taylor Swift oder „Last Christmas“ und „Faith“ von Wham! bzw. George Michael) ist der vierte dieser Songs „Teenage Dirtbag“ von Wheatus. 

 

5. „Unwanted“ gibt es neben der regulären CD in vier weiteren Auflagen, die sich im Cover unterscheiden. Man hat nämlich die Auswahl, ob man dort (und auf einem beiliegenden Poster) Heather Baron-Gracie (Gesang, Gitarre), Ciara Doran (Schlagzeug), Hugo Silvani (Gitarre) oder Charlie Wood (Bass) sehen möchte.

6. Auch Freunde der Kasette kommen auf ihre Kosten und haben die Wahl zwischen den Ausführungen Hot Pink, Silver Glitter und Red Transparent. 

7. Bei der Schallplatte darf man zwischen Black Ice Standard Vinyl, Purple Galaxy Vinyl und Neon Pink Vinyl entscheiden. 

8. Nur auf 1000 Exemplare war die Holographic Edition bei Blood Records limitiert: The A-side of each record has a second holographic groove cut into each LP that creates a spectacular pattern.

9. Seit Mai wurden vier Songs vorab als Singles veröffentlicht: „Lies“, „Reasons To Live“, „Jealousy“ und „The Hard Way“. Für „Lies“ und „Jealousy“ wurden Videos mit der Regisseurin Vasilisa Forbes gedreht, für „Reasons To Live“ zeichnete sich Kelsi Luck, die Partnerin von Heather Baron-Gracie, verantwortlich.

 

10. Bei Metacritic schneidet das neue Album der Pale Waves deutlich besser ab als seine beiden Vorgänger: „My Mind Makes Noise“ (2018; 61/100), „Who am I?“ (2021; 62/100) und „Unwanted“ (2022; 73/100).

It’s the pacier moments that make up the bulk of the highlights, but there are other areas of interest. Unwanted seems determined to be lots of different things to different people, ticking boxes left, right and centre in a way that seems ambitious rather than cynical, while mostly delivering on its multitude of promises. Soul-baring ballads The Hard Way and Without You reveal the breadth of their pop ambitions and the larger venues they’re eyeing for the future. Big spaces call for big songs, though, and big songs call for big sentiments, which Unwanted has plenty of, exploring notions of self-acceptance, loss, betrayal and much more. And while that lyricism may sometimes be a little too broad in its strokes to pierce more weathered hearts, it’s impossible not to be won over by singer Heather Baron-Gracie’s charisma and delivery.

There’s no doubt that Unwanted is an important record for Pale Waves, though in pivoting to a more alt-rock sound, the band may open themselves up to accusations of musical opportunism from a discerning audience who can smell fakery a mile off. Sampling the fruits of this new chapter, however, suggests Pale Waves are going to win people over. They’re doing what they love for the good of others and making hugely enjoyable music in the process. You don’t get more real than that.

Called ‘Unwanted’ as a rallying cry to marginalised groups, the album is a defiant expression of darker emotions, with heartbreak inspiring fiery opening track ‘Lies’ as well as the title track, while ‘You’re So Vain’ calls out a narcissistic partner, the poignant ‘Numb’ explores mental health struggles, and ‘Reasons To Live’ charts rising up from rock bottom. Leaning more into the pop-rock sound of their previous record, ‘Unwanted’ shines in its ability to produce a pop-punk anthem your ‘00s faves wish they could’ve written. Throughout, Heather holds nothing back, with the thrashing ‘Jealousy’ summing up the album’s ethos: “I won’t pretend / And I won’t apologise.”
