Letting Up Despite Great Faults - IV

Mit Blushing hatten wir vor einigen Tagen bereits eine Shoegaze-Band aus Austin, Texas vorgestellt, nun kommt eine weitere hinzu, die in den USA auch gemeinsam mit ihnen auf Tournee sein wird. Jedoch anders als diese und die aus der selben Stadt kommenden Ringo Deathstarr setzen Letting Up Despite Great Faults weniger auf Gitarrenwände und Noise-Ausbrüche, als auf sanften, warmen, tanzbaren Indiepop. Elektronische Klänge stellen eine nicht von der Hand zu weisende Nähe zu New Order dar, die ebenfalls einen Sänger haben, dessen Stimme (aus Gründen) nicht zu sehr in den Vordergrund gemischt wurde. Aber die Nutzung der Gitarre soll hier nicht in Abrede gestellt werden: So markant wie auf dem neuen, von Simon Scott (Slowdive) abgemischten Album war sie bisher noch nicht zu hören, beispielsweise auf „Self-Portrait“ oder „Gemini“:

 

„IV“ ist, man kann es bereits vermuten, das vierte Album der Band nach „Letting Up Despite Great Faults“ (2009), „Untogether“ (2012) und „Neon“ (2014). Zumindest die letzten beiden Platten stehen bereits bei mir im Schrank, auch wenn sie ohne Label veröffentlicht wurden, was einen Kauf über Bandcamp inklusive Versand- und Zollgebühren notwendig machte. Auch das neue Album, auf das man 8 Jahre warten musste, ist dort als translucent green Vinyl erhältlich. Wer mehr von der Band von Mike Lee (Gesang, Gitarre, Programming), zu der aktuell noch Annah Fisette (Gitarre, Keyboards, Gesang), Kent Zambrana (Bass) und Daniel Schmidt (Schlagzeug) gehören, kann auch noch zu mehreren EPs (digital oder auf CD erschienen) greifen: „Movement“ (2006), „Paper Cush“ (2011) und „Alexander Devotion“ (2017). 

The opening track Kisses is a synth laden cacophony of dream like instrumentals that really give it an otherworldly quality. It is uplifting, buoyant and the perfect way to ease you into a shoegaze album.  

Corners Pressed has some excellent guitar riffs that put me in mind of The Cure but without feeling like a direct copy. Softly, Bravely demonstrates the band using different guitar effects. It has much more treble and an almost classic rock and roll sound. Gorgeous is a harder hitting track, and a great example of the way synth can be used to make a song heavier. New Ground is definitely one of the standouts for me on this album. I found the beat very infectious, and the song’s message about how the fear of change can ultimately damage your relationships is very poignant. 

Curl is an instrumental interlude with very rich and complex sounds that was a refreshing palate cleanser for the final track Self Portrait. With Self Portrait they definitely saved the best for last in my opinion, the song has several traits of pop punk with catchy guitar riffs and some excellent drum fills that give this song a bit more punch than previous tracks. 

So, while this album does have some excellent instrumental merits, there are unfortunately some drawbacks. The vocals on this album are underwhelming, it could be argued that shoegaze vocalists are supposed to be sedate due to the nature of the music, but I have heard artists in similar genres exhibit more passion. You’ll notice that I haven’t mentioned too much about the lyrical aspects of this album and that’s because I often couldn’t make them out. There is either too much mumbling or the wall of fuzzy sound overpowering them.

Yes, their fourth record, and all Letting Up’s hallmarks are here to hear, the warmth from opener “Kisses” to closer “Self-Portrait”, the soft, high atmospherics of “Gorgeous”, and more. It’s never going to bowl you over, with songs blending together rather than standing out, and will likely remain a niche style, but is lovely from start to finish.

Soft, sweet sounds will always have a market, even if they will always only have that market. Unless you’re My Bloody Valentine at like All Tomorrow’s Parties, they’re never going to headline a festival with nice relax. But it’s nice all the same.
