Low Island - If You Could Have It All Again

Radiohead, Ride, Supergrass und Foals. Aber auch Unbelievable Truth, Heavenly oder Talulah Gosh. Für eine Stadt mit nur rund 150.000 Einwohnern hat Oxford, vermutlich auch Dank seiner Universität, beachtlich viele tolle Bands hervorgebracht. Berühmte, aber auch weniger beachtete.

Nun möchten sich auch Low Island in diese Auflistung einreihen, vermutlich am liebsten in die erste Gruppe. Dazu behielten Carlos Posada, Felix Higginbottom, Jamie Jay und Jacob Lively alle Fäden selbst in der Hand: Das Quartett ließ sich seit seiner Gründung rund 5 Jahre für die Veröffentlichung seines Debütalbums Zeit, organisierte selbst die Aufnahmen und Produktion in Oxford, Los Angeles sowie Marcenay (Frankreich) und gründete ein eignes Label namens Emotional Interference.

Das Resultat der Bemühungen trägt den Titel „If You Could Have It All Again“ und ist als CD und LP in drei unterschiedlichen Versionen erhältlich: Standard LP (140g black vinyl), Deluxe LP (Limited edition 180g vinyl, gatefold sleeve and artwork/lyric booklet.) und Crystal Clear LP (Limited edition crystal clear viny).

Low Island versuchen sich an einer ambitionierten Mixtur aus tanzbarem Elektro-Artpop und Indierock, so dass häufig sowohl lokale Vorbilder wie Radiohead und Foals als auch deutlich elektronischere Künstler wie LCD Soundsystem oder Caribou für Vergleiche herangezogen werden. 

 

Low Island’s new album, If You Could Have It All Again, opens with a pulsating electronic note, a stripped-back atmospheric soundscape building and echoing, carrying a high lilting vocal until it meets with a chaotic end. A more rhythmic, upbeat, electronic dance pop sound takes over. Occasional bursts of distortion emanate on tracks, such as What Do You Stand For, ramping up with electronic patterns and noise over a dance beat.

There are moments of gentle beauty too, In Your Arms takes you on a surreal smoke-veiled trip, pulsating notes slipping in and out of tune, driving the song onwards. Lyrics floating above, drifting. An album of contrasts, from gentle to driven, and a worthy debut.

This album demonstrates how much Low Island have to offer with their fantastically intricate music and gorgeous melodies. However, it feels like Posada sometimes is not writing the music with his own tastes in mind for much of the album.  The music is atmospheric, calming and meditative, but it fails to grab the listener and demand attention.
