whenyoung - Reasons To Dream

Heute in einer Woche lockt das A Summer’s Tale Festival zum fünften Mal in die Lüneburger Heide. Und zum vierten Mal folgen wir dem Ruf von interessantem Rahmenprogramm (Lesungen von u.a. Heinz Strunk, John Niven oder Anja Rützel, Workshops (z.B. Woodworking, Wein mit allen Sinnen, Bliss Balls) & Activities (Kanufahrten, Yoga, Pflanzenwanderung), Shows & Performences (Hamburger Kneipenchor, 11 Freunde live, Kneipenquiz) und natürlich tollen Konzerten. Auf jeden Fall werde ich mir die Auftritte von Maximo Park, The Charlatans, Kate Nash sowie der beiden Headliner Elbow und Suede ansehen. Aber es gibt auch reichlich deutsche Künstler zu entdecken und so stehen Das Paradies, Mogli, ClickClickDecker, Die Höchste Eisenbahn, Die Goldenen Zitronen und natürlich Enno Bunger auf meiner Liste. Obwohl es bei den Konzerten nahezu keine Überschneidungen gibt, ist die Planung des Auftritts von The Charlatans äußerst ärgerlich: Einerseits muss eine meiner liebsten Bands bereits um 15:00 Uhr auftreten, andererseits ist ihr Konzert für nur 45 Minuten angesetzt!   

Noch früher, nämlich um 12.00 Uhr,  muss am gleichen Tag eine noch recht unbekannte Band namens whenyoung auftreten. Hier scheint aber die geplante Konzertlänge von einer Dreiviertelstunde sinnvoll, denn das Trio aus dem irischen Limerick hat mit „Reasons To Dream“ erst ein Album veröffentlicht. Und vielleicht kann der zwischen The Cranberries und Fear Of Men liegende Gitarrenpop nicht nur beim Festival zu einer der großen Überraschungen werden, sondern auch hier bei Platten vor Gericht.

Aoife Power (Gesang/Bass), Niall Burns (Gitarre) und Andrew Flood (Drums) kennen sich bereits aus Schulzeiten und haben 2016 erste Singles „See How They Run“, „Actor“) herausgebracht, die das Interesse von Virgin EMI Records geweckt haben. Nicht weniger toll, dass whenyoung auf der Feier zum 60. Geburtstag von Shane McGowan (The Pogues) auftreten durften, nachdem dieser ihre Coverversion von „Fairytale Of New York“ gehört hatte. 

Hier gibt es mit „Pretty Pure“, „Never Let Go“, „The Others“ und „Future“ vier der elf Songs von „Reasons To Dream“ zu sehen/ hören:

The hooks remain on ‘Reasons To Dream’ - there are bucketfuls of earworms - but there’s an added bite and emotional weight to their make-up. Lead single ‘Never Let Go’ is a gargantuan statement - both in message and sound - with swirling guitars and Aoife Power’s astonishing vocal range lifted above swathes of reverb as she delivers a hammerblow message to those suffering with their mental health, repeating the track’s title.
‘Future’ treads the same path, bravely detailing the suicide of a friend and the emotional recovery that followed. Team this heavy emotional resonance with the gorgeously catchy skips of ‘You’re Grand’ and ‘In My Dreams’, and ‘Reasons To Dream’ sees Whenyoung come good - better than good - at exactly the right time. On their debut, they’re a band to believe in.

Reasons To Dream features internal thoughts that are relatable and moving. The album opens with 'Pretty Pure', which is an energetic and anthemic slice of pop. The track is catchy and is home to a chorus that will draw you in instantly. 'Pretty Pure' is reminiscent of a feeling that crawls beyond the surface. This charged up opening presents the backdrop for the rest of the album. 'Never Let Go' is a gut-wrenching yet soaring number inspired by mental health. The track captures one's search for release amongst the darkness. 'You're Grand' is another example of their skill of crafting a song that is enwrapped in introspective lyrics, but is also catchy. Inspired by the loss of a friend, 'Future' explores the emotional aftermath. Appearing towards the end of the album 'Blank Walls' is another erupting song designed to be blasted aloud. Standout words include, "If you try, you might cry, you won't die, you might cry." Across many instances on Reasons To Dream, whenyoung are able to explore fragile moments and feelings and turn them into something that's utterly beautiful. (…)
Reasons To Dream is a release that will remain etched in your mind — whenyoung have poured everything they have into the album and the result is a listening experience that's unforgettable.
