I Was A King - Slow Century

Der Teenage Fanclub Fanclub ist zurück. Und mittlerweile nimmt sich die norwegische Band, die zwischen 2009 und 2014 gleich vier Alben veröffentlicht hat, fast genau so lange Pausen wie ihre schottischen Vorbilder. Bei „Bubble“, „Tiny Dots“ oder „Egersound“ muss man schon genau hinhören, um das Quartett nicht mit Teenage Fanclub zu verwechseln. Und jetzt kommt es: I Was A King hatten auf ihrem Debütalbum als Referenz noch einen Song namens „Norman Bleik“ und nun ist das Unausweichliche tatsächlich geschehen, Norman Blake von Teenage Fanclub hat „Slow Century“ produziert. Mit Paul Savage von The Delgados (King Creosote, Mogwai, Arab Strap) sorgte ein zweiter bekannte Musiker fürs Mischen. 

Neben Teenage Fanclub tauchen in fast allen Plattenkritiken von I Was A King die Namen The Byrds, Big Star oder Nada Surf auf. Damit wäre die Zielgruppe, die von „Slow Century“ auf keinen Fall enttäuscht werden wird, auch gut eingegrenzt.

This Norwegian outfit excels at writing beautiful indie meets power pop tunes that manage to be simultaneously dreamy, melodic and downright beautiful.
Fronted by vocalists-guitarists Frode Strømstad and Anne Lise Frøkedal, whose vocals blend together in the best of ways and made me think of Nada Surf from time to time, I Was A King embrace the sounds of those that came before them like Big Star, The Posies and Teenage Fanclub (whose Norman Blake produced the album), while still making something very much their own. The fact that they not only pull it off, but manage to do it in the most unassuming of ways only makes things even better.
If you are looking for an album that will sweep you away to a better place for half an hour, then I Was A King have got you more than covered.
