Aus Reading, Berkshire, stammen Matt Thomson (Gesang), Chris Alderton (Gitarre), Elliot Briggs (Bass) und Joe Emmett (Schlagzeug), die sich gemeinsam The Amazons nennen.

Tathergang:

Das 2014 gegründete Quartett veröffentlichte im folgenden Jahr „Don’t You Wanna“ auf eigene Faust und weckte dadurch das Interesse von Fiction Records, die sie unter Vertrag nahmen. Vor dem Debütalbum „The Amazons“ erschienen seit 2015 bereits sieben Singles, die bis auf „Nightdriving“ auch alle den Weg auf die Platte fanden und von fünf weiteren Liedern ergänzt werden. The Amazons tauchten in den Listen „Sound Of 2017“ der BBC und „Brand New 2017“ von MTV auf wurden vom NME und The Independent mit dem Label „Band to listen to in 2017“ versehen.

Plädoyer:

The Amazons spielten beim gestrigen Best Kept Secret Festival vor Circa Waves und The Boxer Rebellion auf der Hauptbühne. Eine treffende Wahl. Tatsächlich waren sie die einzigen aus diesem Trio, die ich mir live angesehen habe, was weniger an der mangelnden Qualität der anderen beiden Bands als viel mehr an den Auftritten von Honeyblood bzw. Mitski auf alternativen Bühnen gelegen hat. The Amazons haben mit „Black Magic“, „Little Something“ oder „Junk Food Forever“ überzeugende Indierock-Songs im Gepäck, die Fans von Palma Violets oder Royal Blood gefallen dürften. Das Debütalbum der ebenfalls vergleichbaren Sundara Karma, die ich ebenfalls beim Best Kept Secret sehen konnte, ist jedoch insgesamt gesehen stärker ausgefallen. 

Dass es nicht immer nur der energetische, wuchtige Hau-drauf-Rock sein muss, zeigen The Amazons auf der Deluxe Edition mit sechs akustischen Versionen ihrer Songs. Vermutlich hätte eine Durchmischung der unterschiedlichen Song-Varianten dem Album gut getan, denn so sorgt nur die abschließende Piano-Ballade „Palace“ für etwas Abwechslung.

„The Amazons“ steht aktuell bei Metacritic bei 65/100 Punkten:

What the Amazons do particularly well is play together, locking tightly syncopated instrumental sections to catchy, impassioned songs. They like to get stuck into a headbanging groove, grungy riffs counterpointed with thrilling, effects-laden lead guitar, all fused together by a powerhouse drummer with a purpose and cohesion that seems almost unstoppable. There are no keyboards (apart from piano on striking closing ballad Palace), no hip hop inflections or modern pop touches. The whole thing might as well have been smashed together from Black Sabbath, Nirvana, Oasis and Queens of the Stone Age, with a pungently youthful flavour of sexual yearning.The Amazons share ground with Catfish and the Bottlemen, another young guitar band who have succeeded in filling arenas with singalong love songs. Perhaps romance is what it takes to make rock that sounds like pop music again. One thing is for sure: played with this kind of gusto, it is hard to imagine guitars ever going out of fashion.(The Telegraph)

Opener ‘Stay With Me’ could be seen as a plea from the band to keep you listening, but with riffs this infectious it’s hard to tear your ears away regardless. Like the entirety of the album, it’s recorded live, taking away a clinically polished sound and instead opting to create a raucous gig experience in your headphones. Rising from the ashes left by their flame-filled tour van, and subject of the album artwork, Big Suze, ‘Burn My Eyes’ is as ferocious as its name would suggest, confirming only two tracks in that the quartet have gnarly rock ‘n’ roll down to a tee.‘Junk Food Forever’ was made to induce mass sing-a-longs in festival fields. With euphoria ingrained into its musicality, one can only imagine how exhilarating the atmosphere will be when this is played during their native Reading Festival performance this summer. Lashing riffs and building percussion make ‘Raindrops’ more fiery than it’s namesake, as an anthemic theme laced through the record owed in part to production whizz Catherine Marks, appears more prevalent than ever.Hardcore Amazons fans may recognise many of the tracks on the debut, which could be met with some mild scepticism, however it would be an understatement to say tracks like ‘Ultraviolet’ and ‘Something In The Water’ have been beefed up. Essentially they’ve grown up, graduated and have just passed their driving test and are now more than ready to take on the big bad world to their fullest potential. Or to put it more simply; they sound huge.(Clash)
