The Bats - The Deep Set

Aber es kommen auch bessere Platten aus Neuseeland als die gestern vorgestellte. Zum Beispiel  diese hier: „The Deep Set“, das neunte Album, welches The Bats im Verlauf der letzten 30 Jahre veröffentlicht haben. Dieser geringe Output ist einer rund 10-jährigen Auszeit geschuldet, die Band nahm um Familien zu gründen,Kinder aufzuziehen und andere musikalische Projekte zu betreiben. 2005 war das Quartett plötzlich wieder da und feierte 2011 mit „Free All The Monsters“ auch ein Comeback auf ihrem alten Label Flying Nun Records. Pitchfork feierte die Veröffentlichung mit "...their best record in years, possibly ever“.

Den ersten Teil des Zitats kann man auch in Bezug auf „The Deep Set“ verwenden, da seitdem erneut sechs Jahre verstrichen sind. Paul Kean (Bass), Malcolm Grant (Schlagzeug), Robert Scott (Gesang, Gitarre, Keyboards) und Kaye Woodward (Gitarre, Gesang) werden, obwohl sie aus Christchurch stammen, dem Dunedin Sound zugerechnet. Vor zwei Jahren konnten wir hier positiv über das Comeback von The Chills, weitere Vertreter dieser Richtung, berichten und man darf gespannt sein, wer in den nächsten Jahren noch so folgt. 

Wenn die Alben so gut gelingen, wie „The Deep Set“, dann dürfen wir uns freuen. The Bats schrammeln sich durch melodische Indiepop-Songs, die mal an The Go-Betweens (insbesondere Grant McLennan) oder R.E.M. vor „Green“ erinnern, bestreiten eher New Adventures in Lo-Fi, sind immer irgendwie Out Of Time und manchmal auch, ähnlich wie David Gedge von The Wedding Present, Out Of Tune.

Christchurch-bred purveyors of the fabled Dunedin Sound are firmly in the latter camp: now into their third decade with the original line-up, the four-piece have racked up nine albums characterised by chugging chords, jangly guitars and the charming, simplistic worldview of guitarist/vocalist Robert Scott (also bassist for Flying Nun staples The Clean). This shared experience has gifted the foursome a clear simpatico and inherent indie-pop smarts, and on The Deep Set Scott's songs prove as effortlessly dreamy as ever. His innate sense of melody extends to both the arrangements and his bittersweet vocal delivery, the tunes augmented by shimmering harmonies and classy string accompaniment, while guitarist Kaye Woodward's lead parts twist and meander, dripping with expression. The album opens with the melancholic Rooftops but quickly blossoms with the upbeat Looking For Sunshine and the luminous Rock And Pillars, while No Trace explores personal themes atop beautiful vocal melodies and strings carry the dreamy slice of nostalgia and longing that is lead single Antlers.
Towards the back end Shut Your Eyes is darker and more foreboding, The Bats proving once again that simple, well-executed ideas and arrangements are entirely capable of triggering complex responses.
