Hört man The Lone Bellows Debüt denkt man während des ersten Songs unausweichlich an Mumford & Sons. Doch offensichtlich war der 2010 gegründeten Band bewusst, dass die Welt nach „Babel“ im Jahr 2013 nicht bereit war für ein weiteres Album dieser Machart. So wählten Zach Williams, Kanene Donehey Pipkin und Brian Elmquist eine vielseitigere Mischung aus Folk, Country, Pop, Soul, Gospel und Rock um die Hörer mit gefälligen Melodien zu erfreuen.

Erstaunlich ist an The Lone Bellow vor allem, dass die Band in Brooklyn ansässig ist. Das Bild wird allerdings korrigiert wenn man bedenkt, dass zwei der Mitglieder sich während des Studiums in Lynchburg, Virgina kennenlernten und Zach Williams gar aus Georgia stammt. „The lone bellow“ klingt auch wesentlich stärker nach Südstaaten denn nach New York. Die Soul- und Pop-Elemente sorgen für hymnische Momente aber an einigen Stellen wirkt das doch etwas dick aufgetragen. Das ein oder andere versteckte Augenzwinkern hätte diesem Album gut getan. So ist das für mich “nicht Fisch und nicht Fleisch”.

In meinem Ohren klingen Mumford & Sons überzeugender und auf ihre Weise auch authentischer als The Lone Bellow. Fans von Mumford & Sons können sich über „Green eyes and a heart of gold“ aber sicher mit „The lone bellow“ anfreunden.

If Fleetwood Mac shimmered more, rocked less and were organic without being raw, that might suggest the level of evocative language and romance The Lone Bellow exudes.
