Breathless - See Those Colours Fly

Außer Atem muss hier niemand geraten, denn Breathless bewegen sich recht behäbig zwischen ätherischem Dreampop, melancholischem Shoegaze und verträumtem Slowcore. Dass „See Those Colours Fly“ in Zusammenarbeit mit Kramer entstand, der auch schon Galaxie 500 und Low produzierte, ist äußerst stimmig.

Breathless bestehen aus Dominic Appleton (Gesang, Keyboards), Gary Mundy (Gitarre), Ari Neufeld (Bass) und Tristram Latimer Sayer (Schlagzeug) und haben seit Mitte der 80er Jahre insgesamt acht Alben über ihr eigens Label Tenor Vossa Records veröffentlicht. Die letzte Veröffentlichung („Green To Blue“) liegt bereits 10 Jahre zurück und auf dem aktuellen Album ist anstatt des Schlagzeugers ein Drum Computer zu hören, da Tristram Latimer Sayer drei Tage vor den Aufnahmen in einen schweren Autounfall verwickelt war und im Koma lag. Er ist aber wieder auf dem Weg der Besserung.

„See Those Colours Fly“ bietet nun 9 Songs in 45:32 Minuten und ist als CD und LP (red Vinyl in Gatefold Cover) erhältlich. 

Und wer sich fragt, woher ihm die Stimme von Dominic Appleton bekannt vorkommt, dem sei verraten, dass er an This Mortal Coil, dem Projekt des 4AD Gründers Ivo Watts-Russell, beteiligt und auf insgesamt vier Songs von „Filigree & Shadow“ (1986) und „Blood“ (1991) zu hören war.

But See Those Colours Fly is also an album of contrasts, an album of perfect tiny details stitched to create the bigger picture, its resounding, melancholic tapestry anchored by expert songcraft. It is, as Kramer says, excruciatingly beautiful. Let it massage your soul.

‘See Those Colours Fly’, then, is an exercise in both expanse and concision, the group experimenting with and jamming around song structures in rehearsal and then pairing the tracks back in recording and post-production. The result is perhaps the most perfectly distilled album of the group’s career.
