Personalien:

Die Londoner Band Happyness besteht seit dem Ausstieg von Benji Compston im Februar 2019 nur noch aus Jonny Allan und Ash Cooper (nun als Drag-Queen Ash Kenazi unterwegs).

Tathergang:

Als Trio veröffentlichten Happyness mit „Weird Little Birthday“ (2014) und „Write In“ (2017) zwei Alben. „Floatr“, von der Band als „both a break-up and a coming out album“ beschrieben, ist nun ihre erste Platte (schwarzes oder durchsichtiges Vinyl) als Duo.

Plädoyer:

Die Mischung aus Janglepop, Slacker- und Indierock lässt an US-Vorbilder der 90er Jahre denken: The Flaming Lips, Sparklehorse, Pavement und Dinosaur Jr - und vor allem an eine Band, die wie Happyness aus dem Vereinigten Königreich stammt, in der Britpop-Hochphase aber eher über den großen Teich schielte: Teenage Fanclub. Auch wenn akustische Gitarren, Piano und orchestrale Arrangements den Sound von „Floatr“ dominieren, dürfen die Gitarren zwischendurch bei angezogenem Tempo auch mal schrammeln und aufheulen.  

Zeugen:

It shimmers with wonky ’90s-indebted pop smarts, a daisy-chain of balmy nostalgia with blissed-out guitars, hushed vocals and kaleidoscopic lyrics. ‘Vegetable’, written amid the shrapnel of the group’s break-up, is a pop song that manages to include lyrical references to Chumbawamba’s ‘Tubthumping’, RuPaul’s Drag Race alumnus Jujubee and Scientology. It’s a veritable Family Fortunes board of ‘Things You Wouldn’t Expect To See In A Song Together’. The title track, meanwhile, deals evocatively with the struggle to come to terms with yourself.

Emotional yet playful, soft yet strong, Happyness newest is the sound of a band fully settled in their own skin.

As the band continue to explore the elements of shoegaze, jazz-melodies and saccharine pop at the edges of their well-worn indie-rock, Happyness find themselves back in top form and ready to reach out once more into a chaotic unknown.
