Moby - Innocents

10 Fakten zum neuen Album von Moby:

1. Am 20. April, dem Record Store Day 2013, veröffentlichte Moby mit der 7-inch-Single "The Lonely Night" einen ersten Vorboten zu seinem neuen Album. Als Gastsänger ist Mark Lanegan zu hören. Zum ungewöhnlichen, weil atmosphärisch düsteren Song sagt Moby: so really there are only 3 tracks: left channel through a distortion pedal and guitar amp, right channel through a distortion pedal and guitar amp, and mark's vocals. The end result is intentionally very broken and atmospheric.

2. Der Videoclip zu "The Lonely Night" stammt vom Regisseur Colin Rich und zeigt stimmungsvolle und seltsam zeitlupenhaft anmutende Zeitraffer-Aufnahmen von der kalifornischen Wüste und den Lichtermeeren von Los Angeles:

3. Als erste offizielle Single folgte am 01. Juli der Song "A Case For Shame".  Als Gastsängerin ist Al Spx, so das Pseudonym der kanadischen Sängern von Cold Specks, zu hören, die dazu Folgendes zu sagen hat: "he had heard about me because I'm on Mute in America and the UK. He heard about the record ("I Predict A Graceful Expulsion") and asked if I wanted to sing. So I went and I sang. It was a very free, collaborative, creative environment. He was really open to what I was doing and luckily he liked what I was doing and it worked really well. I was quite happy to do it and I would probably do it again some day if he asked me."

4. Das Video zu "A Case Of Shame" stammt von Moby selbst und zeigt ihn und die Sängerin unter Wasser und teilweise maskiert in Mobys Zuhause in Los Angeles. Dazu der Künstler: "the video has a specific meaning for me, but i'm hesitant to say what that is, as it might have a very specific meaning to you, and it's completely open to anyone's subjective interpretation. just because i made it doesn't mean that my interpretation of it is the right one. i'd love to hear what you think of it and what your interpretation is. 

oh, and it goes without saying, but it's certainly not a big, commercial video... it's an experimental video, inspired by some of my early heroes of experimental film, like jack smith (who also inspired fellini and andy warhol, so i guess at the very least i'm in good company in citing jack smith as an inspiration, even if i'm clearly not fellini or andy warhol...)" 

5. Mit "The Perfect Life" wurde vorab am 10. September eine weitere Single veröffentlicht. Diesmal ist Wayne Coyne von The Flaming Lips, den Moby seit einer gemeinsamen Tour im Vorprogramm der Red Hot Chilli Peppers im Jahre 1995 kennt, zu hören.

6. Anfang Oktober veröffentlichte Richard Melville Hall dann sein elftes Studioalbum "Innocents" über Little Idiot/Mute. "Innocents" wurde in Mobys Appartement aufgenommen und von Mark 'Spike' Stent (Muse, Depeche Mode, Björk, U2, Coldplay) produziert.    

Aber dieses traumverlorene, irgendwie sphärisch und dunkel klingende Ambient-Gefühl, das "Innocents" mit viel Aufwand und immer wiederkehrendem Streichereinsatz aufbauen will, das können andere besser. Der Mann, der vom Techno kam, aus der Szene aber hochkant rausgeworfen wurde, schickt uns nochmal ans Ende der Neunziger. Denn wer sich "Play", sein bislang erfolgreichstes und 1999 erschienenes Album in Erinnerung ruft, mag zuerst an "Honey", "Porcelain" und "Why Does My Heart Feel So Bad" denken. Doch er muss zugeben: Der überwältigend große Rest der Platte aus dem Jahr 1999 klingt der Platte aus dem Jahr 2013 dann doch sehr ähnlich.

Klar wird sich wieder die eine oder andere Düsseldorfer "Szene-Bar" finden, die "Innocents" spielen wird. Aber modern klingt Moby (derzeit) nicht (mehr).

7. Wie beim Vorgänger "Destroyed" stammen alle Fotos auf dem Cover und im Booklet von Moby.

8. Neben Cold Specks, Mark Lanegan und Wayne Coyne sind auf dem Album Inyang Bassey, Skylar Grey und Damien Jurado als Gaststimmen zu hören.

"Innocents" ist mit seinen 12 Titeln in etwas mehr als 64 Minuten nicht gerade kurz geraten. Hinzu kommt noch eine Deluxe Bonus EP namens "Everyone Is Gone", die ebenfalls 6 Titel beinhaltet und fast eine halbe Stunde lang läuft.

9. Metacritic weist derzeit einen Metascore von 62/100 Punkten für "Innocents" bei 16 berücksichtigten Kritiken aus:

There's a hypnotic purity to Innocents. (Spin)

Innocents contains some great vocal performances and catchy hooks, and despite the tent ropes being held down by the weight of mediocrity, it'll please many Play-era Moby fans and radio listeners as ideal background music for patio conversations about how their stocks are performing. (Exclaim)

It's still a Moby album--patient tempos, frosted with strings and comfortably melancholy melodies. But working with his first outside producer, Mark "Spike" Stent (Gaga, Beyoncé, Massive Attack), has made him knuckle down; the writing is sharper than on 2009's sketchy Wait for Me or 2011's overblown Destroyed. 10. Moby begab sich Anfang auf eine Welttournee, die ihn für 3 Auftritte nach Los Angeles ins Fonda Theatre führte. Er begründete dies so: "When I go on tour I sit around a lot (cars, airports, hotels, etc), and when I sit around I can't spend my time making music. And pretty much all I want to do in life is stay home and make music. So, thus: a three-date world tour."
