Sugar For The Pill - Wanderlust

Der Bandnamen stammt von einem Slowdive-Song, das Plattencover lässt an das letzte Werk von My Bloody Valentine denken und damit wäre die Musik von Sugar For The Pill auch schon recht treffend im Dreampop / Shoegaze-Kosmos verortet („Quicksand“, „Moan Of The Thunder“, „Stardust“). Aber das Quartett aus Griechenland hat noch mehr zu bieten, denn auch Post-Punk Bands wie Interpol und Editors werden von ihnen offensichtlich sehr geschätzt („Falling Back To You“, „Soul Can Wait“, „Diamonds“). Beim Hören von „Shiver“ oder „More Than A Lover“ fällt mir persönlich noch eine weitere, leider zu wenig wahrgenommene Band als Referenz ein, die mir seit Anfang der 90er viel Vergnügen bereitet hat: The Heart Throbs.  

„Wanderlust“ ist das Debütalbum der 2020 gegründeten Band, jedoch waren Vana Rose (Gesang), Spyros Mitrokotsas (Gitarre), Elias K (Gitarre), Stefanos Manousis (Bass, Keyboards) und Konstantinos Athanasopoulos (Schlagzeug) früher bereits Mitglieder bei Skinner Box bzw. Dead Buildings. In Europa ist die Schallplatte in limitierter Auflage auf red Vinyl über Make Me Happy Records erschienen - so weit die gute Nachricht. Die schlechte ist, dass sie bereits ausverkauft ist, so dass man sie nur noch als Import über das US-Label Shelflife Records beziehen kann.      

 

In Wanderlust the band have crafted a debut that delivers consistently across all ten of its tracks. The album has a sound all of its own whilst drawing influence from all our favourite 90’s bands. Most of all, this platter is all heart. Everything is laid out in the grooves; nothing was held back. That authentic originality is what’s going to win Sugar For The Pill more and more fans as word gets out. Don’t be like me, don’t delay, go check this album out today. Because, like me, you’ll be so glad you did.
