No Joy - More Faithful

Dissonant starten No Joy in ihr neues Album. "Remember Nothing" lässt vermuten, dass sich Gesang, Gitarre und Rhythmusgruppe tatsächlich an nichts erinnern können, schon gar nicht an den Song, den sie jetzt gemeinsam performen wollen. Fans der frühen My Bloody Valentine dürfen sich hier aber gerne angesprochen fühlen. Im folgenden Song, "Everything New",  ist eigentlich gar nicht alles neu, denn diesen harmonisch wohlklingenden Dreampop hatten die Cocteau Twins und Lush bereits vor mehr 20 Jahren im Programm.

Danach pendelt das Album zwar weiterhin zwischen diesen Polen - "Hollywood Teeth" könnte tatsächlich aus der Schublade von Kevin Shields stammen und "Judith" passt perfekt zum 4AD Labels - jedoch wird es im Vergleich zu den früheren Platten schneller, rockiger und noisiger ("Corpo Daemon", "Rude Films").  

No Joy werden mit "More Faithful" bereits zum dritten Mal bei Platten vor Gericht vorgeladen und versuchen endlich einmal eine höhere Wertung als 7 Punkte zu erzielen. Für "Ghost Blonde" (2010) und "Wait To Pleasure" (2013) wurde diese Note vereinzelt gezückt, die übrigen Wertungen blieben jedoch darunter. Gibt es also für "More Faithful" mehr Punkte von den Plattenrichtern? 

No Joy ziehen ihr Tempo auf diesem Album an, verpassen sich eine gewisse Unberechenbarkeit, verquirlen ihre typischen Stilelemente mit Andeutungen und Versatzstücken von Garagigem und Punkigem, lustig  Gothic-Spielarten à la Chelsea Wolfe, oder elegisch-süßen Softpop-Hymnen. Und auch wenn all das deutlich variabler, detailverliebter und gewiefter in Richtung Pop produziert sein mag – die kathartische Wirkmacht eines klassischen Shoegaze-Stücks wie etwa „E“ auf dem Vorgänger WAIT TO PLEASURE vermisst man dann doch ein bisschen.

More Faithful is a genre-bending record with explosive yet concentrated sound that stays true to No Joy’s signature shoegaze rock. Getting caught in the dizzying effects of this particular project most readily mimics the band’s direct but conflicted namesake. There’s joy in dream pop, but where there’s sun, there’s shadow. Something is lurking in the dark and wants to rock.

There's plenty of shoegazing happening on More Faithful, but it's not a shoegaze record: "Everything New" is a chilly, lush pop ballad that happens to be surrounded by an arsenal of stomp pedals; "Moon in my Mouth" juxtaposes a wobbling, math-y signature to a dreamy vocal hook; "Burial in Twos" coasts through the heavens on an electro vibe before the band kicks the fuzz engines into overdrive; "Rude Films" brings a bouncy power pop march that arrives on the screaming feedback trails of the woozy neo-folk of "Chalk Snake"; "I am an Eye Machine" climbs from a drowsy new age chime to a psychedelic sunburst of an anthemic climax; and "Corpo Daemon" gets a blistering grunge treatment.

The tracks which do this best; lead single ‘Everything New’, ‘Moon in my Mouth’ and ‘I Am An Eye Machine’ are the ones which break monotony. The intricate layering of warped guitars and echoing vocals is all well and good for the background to summer fun, but for No Joy to be more than this ‘More Faithful’ relies on these more intimate moments. Although these are sparsely scattered throughout they’re just enough to make ‘More Faithful’ more than just a half-listened to soundtrack to road trips and festivals but an album with heart, confidence and intimacy.
