Chris Garneau - Winter Games

Schon seltsam: Da wählt jemand "Winter Games" als Titel für sein Album aus, benennt die Lieder "Winter Song" (gleich zweimal), "Reindeer" oder "Switzerland", lässt Glöckchen klingeln, Streicher zupfen, Bläser erschallen und Chöre jubilieren, so dass es klingt als sängen sie in einer hallenden Kathedrale und dennoch erscheint die Platte in physischer Form erst im April 2014. Am 11.04. um genau zu sein.

Jedoch veröffentlicht Chris Garneau sein drittes Album nach den tollen "Music For Tourists" (2006) und "El Radio" (2009) zumindest digital in der passenden Jahreszeit. Für 6,99 € erhält man die 10 von CJ Camerieri und Rob Moose (Bon Iver) arrangierten Songs im Clouds Hill Shop. Unter den Weihnachtsbaum lässt sich das schlecht legen, aber "Winter Games" ist eine passende Alternative zur musikalischen Untermalung der Bescherung.

“This record isn’t about trivial shit,” explains Garneau. “It’s about why love doesn’t happen right, how your person is shaped in the early stages of life. It’s about defeating parental abandonment, sexual abuse, or family rejection. It’s about people who struggle well, what it means to have these things happen to you as a child and play out later in life.”

“I trusted myself on this record,” says Garneau, “and it forced me to go well past my boundaries. I wanted to get away from clean and tight, to make things big and loose and free. Form can be really important but I also wanted to just play music. In the past, I always focused on the ‘song’ first. For the first time, this record is me. That’s all I know.”
