Personalien:
Emily Barker stammt aus einem kleinen Nest im Westen Australiens. Mit 19 Jahren zog sie in die weite Welt hinaus, um 2002 in Cambridge mit Rob Jackson zusammen zu treffen, gemeinsam auf Folk-Festivals zu musizieren und als the-low-country zwei Americana/Alt.Country-Alben zu veröffentlichen. 2007 folgte ihr erstes Soloalbum "Photos.Fires.Fable.", das gleichzeitig die Geburt von The Red Clay Halo (benannt nach einem Song von Gillian Welch) darstellte.


Tathergang:
Anna Jenkins, Jo Silverston und Gill Sandell komplettieren nun dieses Mädchen-Quartett und steuern Violine, Cello, Akkordeon, Piano, Flöten und Gesangsharmonien zum Sound von Emily Barker bei. Der Song "Nostalgia" wurde vom Komponisten Martin Phipps für den Soundtrack der BBC-Adaption der Wallander-Reihe mit Kenneth Branagh ausgewählt und steigerte in Großbritannien den Bekanntheitsgrad von Emily Barker & The Red Clay Halo ungemein.
Nach "Despite The Snow" (2008) ist "Almanac" deren zweite Veröffentlichung. Das Geld für die Aufnahmen und Promotion der Platte sammelte die Band über Pledgemusic.com ein. Innerhalb von nur 5 Wochen waren 114% des angestrebten Betrags zusammen gekommen.


Plädoyer:
Lieblicher, niedlicher bis harmloser Folkpop zwischen Americana und Celtic-Pop, geeignet für Freundinnen von The Corrs oder den Abspann von schwedischen Krimis. Die englischen Medien sind begeistert, aber dort verehrt man ja nicht nur Laura Marling, sondern hört auch (vermutlich heimlich) Clannad.
Aber Cover und Booklet sind wirklich gut gelungen und sehenswert.

From the bucolic build that opens Billowing Sea, via the mournful strings of Dancers – which, again, treads a lyrical path to bodies of water – to the sumptuous climax of Bones, a song capping the album’s greatly graphical wordplay with talk of "a wound of a thousand cuts", this is a dream of a record. So perfectly formed is it that, chances are, the listener will need to go around again immediately, to make sure they weren’t imagining anything. A new Marling, then? No, Barker offers something else – vocals that soar and arrangements that shine, but all the time anchored by a strong, sincere respect for the heritage behind an inevitable rise.

A flawless collection about the temperamental and elemental forces that continually mould us, Almanac is the most definitive statement to date of Barker and The Red Clay Halo’s considerable talent. At times it sounds a little too flawless, but when the women let rip and show the strain at the heart of their songwriting, they reach real heights. Time and tide may wait for no one, but in the shifting fortunes of the creative sea Almanac stands as a gleaming, solid point on the horizon.
