Kula Shaker - Natural Magick

Kula Shaker sind nicht nur mit einem neuen Album zurück, sondern auch in Originalbesetzung. Dies bedeutet,  dass rund eineinhalb Jahre nach „1st Congregational Church of Eternal Love and Free Hugs“ bereits dessen Nachfolger in den Plattenläden steht und dass Crispian Mills, Alonza Bevan und Paul Winterhart nun an Keyboards / Orgel erneut von Jay Darlington begleitet werden, der zuletzt auf „Peasants, Pigs & Astronauts“ (1999) zur Band gehörte und Ende 2022 wieder zur Band stieß.

„Natural Magick“ besteht aus dreizehn energetischen, kurzen Songs, die zwischen Psychedelic-Pop („Whistle And I Will Come“), Folk- („Stay With Me Tonight“) und Raga Rock („Indian Record Player“, „Happy Birthday“) transzendieren, während ihrer letzten Tournee aufgenommen wurden und laut Crispian Mills „sehr stark von der Live-Energie und der spirituellen Verbindung mit dem Publikum angetrieben“ wurden. Bei dem Opener „Gaslighting“ hat man sich vielleicht ein wenig von „You Really Got Me“ (Kinks) inspirieren lassen und für das abschließende „Give Me Tomorrow“ stand wohl der 70er Jahre John Lennon Pate.  

Das siebte Studioalbum von Kula Shaker ist als CD, Kassette und LP (black Vinyl) erhältlich. Die limitierten Auflagen der Schallplatte bieten entweder Tie Dye Coloured Vinyl (orange) oder Pinwheel Colour Vinyl (yellow / pink).

 

The furious opening blast of Gaslighting, with shades of Gil Scott-Heron’s The Revolution Will Not Be Televised repurposed for the social-media age, gives way to the more celebratory Waves and Happy Birthday, laden with sitar and finger cymbals. 

There’s a whiff of ‘things were better in the 90s’ along with the incense, but infectious tunes save the day, notably on Whistle And I Will Come, and Something Dangerous, which is reminiscent of Village Green-era Kinks.

Following the opener, a cascade of catchy rock and pop hits ensues, including the first single released in over two decades with Darlington, the exhilarating "Waves." The funk-infused title track "Natural Magick" showcases Kula Shaker's innovative spirit, evolving from "Get Right Get Ready" on their 2016 album K2.0. The second single, 'Indian Record Player,' pays homage to Bollywood icons R.D. Burman and Asha Parekh. (…)

Two standout tracks, "IDONTWANNAPAYMYTAXES" and "F-Bombs," harmonise seamlessly. The former, a powerful anti-war anthem with a renewed sense of urgency, is complemented by the latter—a humorous and spirited continuation. These songs add a dynamic spark when played consecutively, especially in live performances.

Natural Magick concludes with an emotional and poignant finale in "Give Me Tomorrow." This track fuses early Dusty Springfield charisma with subtle country influences, leaving listeners with the uplifting message, "Let love be your sunshine." While not pushing the boundaries like their previous effort, Natural Magick is more than a nostalgic reunion; it's a genuine fusion of unified energy. The result is an uninterrupted entertainment journey, occasionally punctuated with insightful social commentary to keep the audience engaged.
