The Sophs sind ein Sextett aus Los Angeles, das aus Ethan Ramon (Gesang), Sam Yuh (Keyboard), Austin Parker Jones (E-Gitarre), Seth Smades (Akustikgitarre), Devin Russ (Schlagzeug) und Cole Bobbitt (Bass) besteht.
Tathergang:
Die Sage geht so: The Sophs verschickten ihre Demos per E-Mail an Geoff Travis und Jeannette Lee, die Labelchefs von Rough Trade Records, noch bevor sie überhaupt ein Konzert gespielt hatten. Am nächsten Tag hatten sie das Angebot für einen Plattenvertrag.
Im letzten Jahr übertrug sich deren Begeisterung Dank der Singles „I’m Your Fiend“, „Sweat“ und „Death In The Family“ auf eine breitere Öffentlichkeit und nun steht das Debütalbum „Goldstar“ als CD und LP (black Vinyl, clear red Vinyl) in den Plattenläden.
Plädoyer:
Wie klingen Green Day mit Flamenco-Gitarren, was wäre, wenn Muse mit Bläsern experimentiert hätten, dann tanzen alle betrunken Sirtaki und am Ende erzählt noch einer, dass er sich eine Maultrommel gekauft hat, die unbedingt auf einen Country & Western.-Song muss. Das ist nur ein kleiner Auszug aus dem kreativen Chaos des Albums. Und ich überspitze nur ein wenig.

Bei Metacritic ist aktuell ein Metascore von 85/100 Punkten für „Goldstar“ verzeichnet.
Often like Muse without the bombast, the guitars are huge but not over utilised, infrequently giving way to delta blues, gothic poems or pure pop. An album which reveals more with each listen, ‘Goldstar’ has all the ingredients needed to propel the six-piece outfit into the mainstream, whether they like it or not. Thrillingly weird and wonderful.
Elsewhere, ‘GOLDSTAR’ leans into lounge jazz, hillbilly hoedowns, and wishes for a death in the family to liven things up, while penultimate track ‘They Told Me Jump, I Said How High’ offers a perfectly baffling, rambling stream of consciousness. It’s whimsical, yes, but The Sophs carry it with a raucous expertise akin to the lofty comparisons drawn out by their 2025 run of singles. As a collection, ‘GOLDSTAR’ is the type of first impression that may well leave one slightly lost, a little confused, and with their head certainly spinning, but after it all anyone who meets them will be damn happy they did.
