The Reds, Pinks And Purples - You Might Be Happy Someday

Oh, wie schön ist Indiepop. Das mag sich auch Glenn Donaldson denken, der gemeinsam mit Freunden in seinem Zuhause in San Francisco kleine (und irgendwie doch ganz große) traurige Lieder einspielt. Ob die DIY-Aufnahmen nun in der Küche oder im Schlafzimmer stattfinden, und daher mit den Begriffen Kitchen Pop oder Bedroompop bezeichnet werden, ist einerlei, Fans zwischen Sarah Records, Belle & Sebastian und The Smiths werden ihre Freude an The Reds, Pinks And Purples haben. 

Der Bandname verrät bereits einen Hang zur Farbe und daher erschien „You Might Be Happy Someday“ am 2. Oktober auch als auf 300 Exemplare weltweit limitierte LP auf pastel pink Vinyl.

Dennoch ist die Veröffentlichungstaktik von Glenn Donaldson nicht ganz nachzuvollziehen: 2019 erschien das Debütalbum „Anxiety Art“ als LP über das spanische Label Pretty Olivia Records. Es folgte im Mai über das schwedische Label I Dischi Del Barone eine 7’’ Single namens „I Should Have Helped You“ mit 4 Songs, die auf dem Album nicht enthalten sind. „You Might Be Happy Someday“ erscheint nun beim englischen Label Tough Love - bietet aber nur 8 Lieder in rund 24 Minuten, was aufgrund der Tatsache, dass innerhalb der letzten zwei Jahre nahezu monatlich Songs digital erschienen sind, von denen rund 30 noch auf ihre Vinyl-Veröffentlichung warten, etwas bescheiden ist.

Striking a breezy sound not dissimilar to The War on Drugs, the driving momentum and bright, new wave-toned riffs of new single “Last Summer in a Rented Room” elevate the soft and understated style of Donaldson’s vocal. There is a comforting familiarity to the atmosphere it brings, as well as a palpable (if not quite as indulgent) affinity to The Smiths. However, there is promise of better days despite all of its ambivalence, and a reassuring feeling that this romantic misanthrope is a hopeful one.
