Soviele Richter, soviele Meinungen. Hier meine Sicht auf das Musikjahr 2014.
- The Twilight Sad - Nobody wants to be here and nobody wants to leave; die Schotten veröffentlichten 2014 ihr bislang stärkstes Album und für mich das Album des Jahres 2014.
Passt.
- Elbow - The take off and landing of everything; Elbow kämpfte sich langsam aber stetig and die Spitze.
- Hidden Cameras - Age
- TV On The Radio - Seeds
- We Were Promised Jetpacks - Unravelling
- ALT-J - This is all yours
- St. Vincent - St. Vincent
- The Afghan Whigs - Do the beast
- Eels - The cautionary tales of Mark Oliver Everett
- Tori Amos - Unrepentant geraldines
- Caribou - Our love
- My Brightest Diamond - This is my hand
- Angus & Julia Stone - Angus & Julia Stine
- Orenda Fink - Blue dream
- Sharon Van Etten - Are we there
- First Aid Kit - Stay gold
- Interpol - El pintor
- Honig - It's not a hummingbird, it's your father's ghost
- Morrissey - World peace is none of your business
- Notwist - Close to the glass
- Shellac - Dude incredible
- Asgeir - In the silence
- Broken Bells - After the disco
- William Fitzsimmons - Lions
- Kaiser Chiefs - Education, education, education and war
- Esben And The Witch - A new nature
- Erland And The Carnival - Closing time
- Luke Haines - New York in the 70'ies
- Weeping Willows - The time has come

The War On Drugs - Lost in the dream
It’s no surprise that The War On Drugs’ indie distributor, Secretly Canadian, is part of the same label group as Jagjaguwar, home to Bon Iver. Like Justin Vernon before him, with ‘Lost In The Dream’ Adam Granduciel seems to be heading for things far bigger than anyone could ever have expected. This is one War On Drugs that might just succeed.

Andy Burrows - Fall together again
If Fall Together Again has proven anything, it’s that Burrows is certainly capable of releasing a coherent yet simple album. It may lean heavily towards singer-songwriter territory at times, but the songs themselves have enough substance to make them memorable. Standout track Watch Me Fall Again stands out head and shoulders above the rest of the album, yet that doesn’t take away from the fact that the whole album is impressive.
The masterful production of the record really brings the album into its own. It does exactly as it needs to do, creating enough atmosphere to get the message across, but without overdoing it. There is still ambition in the music, and evidently a clear vision of how they wanted this album to come across. It touches the heart, has a fire and makes you relax as Lamb transport you to a parallel universe where troubles evaporate.

Nils Petter Molvaer - Switch

The Hit Parade - Cornish Pop Songs
This move doesn’t quite see the self-styled “London's No.1 Pop Group” turn into “Cornwall’s No.1 Pop Group” but the Cornish milieu dominates proceedings. There’s even - gasp! - biting social commentary on The Ghost of the Fishing Fleet.
Did someone say concept album? How wrong they were. This is very much a Hit Parade album, so it’s songs about girls and being a bit of a loser in love. Old musical themes are revisited: Spector piano on From Paddington to Penzance, fist-pumpin’ punk pop on Treen Girl, pocketbook electropop on See You At The Seaside, gurlie dickweed indie on Zennor Mermaid.
So business as usual, then. Only instead of getting dumped in London’s leafy western suburbs, it will come as no surprise when our hero Julian Henry advises us that the “girl from Penzance/kicks me in the pants”.
(Did not Chart)
Cornish Pop Songs is a glorious collection of melodic, memorable guitar-based tunes which harks back to the sweet sha-la-la of the indie years but packs a 21st century production punch, all topped by Julian's eager schoolboy-like vocals. You'd never guess he's 55. (...)
Highlights include the quite beautiful Zennor Mermaid (a cousin to Blur's To The End) and the Undertones-like power pop of Treen Girl. It's the perfect summer soundtrack and a brilliant, cohesive album with or without the Cornish connection.

Nervous Nellie - Where The Nightmare Gets In
Am Ende hinterlässt “Where The Nightmare Gets In” einen harmonischen Eindruck.
(Terrorverlag)

Caribou - Our Love
Die recht clubbige erste Single „Can’t Do Without You“ deutete es an: Dieses vierte Caribou-Album ist eine schwelgerische Angelegenheit.

Beck - Morning phase
Music OMH:
Morning Phase rounds out with its strongest tracks, Country Down and Waking Light, both musically lush and lyrically optimistic. The album ends as Beck wakes up ready to face a new day. Whether his melancholy morning is a phase or part of a larger cycle to which he may return in the future (the latter is more likely), Beck proves once again here that he’s a tremendously versatile artist, capable of excelling throughout the musical spectrum.

Jack Ladder And The Dreamlanders - Playmates
The music is still fed through the framework of 80’s rock, but is decisively modern and of the time. Ladder is paced at the forefront, his baritone as intoxicating as ever and his dry gallows humour traced across his incisive lyrics. His crack team execute this vision masterfully. There isn’t a scarce trace of ego in these songs. Every buzzsaw guitar solo, drop of feedback, keyboard line and production trip serving the atmosphere the song demands. Whether it’s the morose loss of "Come On Back This Way", the sinister moping horror trickling through "Neon Blue", the nod to flat out metal aggression of "Reputation Amputation" or the old world romanticism at the heart of "To Keep and Be Kept".
Playmates is the strongest record Jack Ladder has written yet. It’s a record that looks deep into human nature and desires and throws them back at you, with a neat glass of whiskey and a knowing nod. Its achieved using tools of a traditional rock band, with the end product both of our time and timeless.
(The AU Review)
True to the Gary Numan mould of pop music there is little room for virtuosity, every guitar or xylophone melody feels perfectly calculated and placed, the simple but effective nature of the melodic lines rendering some of the songs a classic anthemic quality, which is at the same time understated.
This backdrop allows Jack Ladder the space to match his heartbeat to the drum machine, bringing all the passion and life to the songs as he pleads, purrs and croons his way through these ten remarkable tracks.
One of the things that sets Ladder apart from his contemporaries is his lyrics. Slow Boat to China opens with the image “I watch the whale ride the wake / throwing fountains at the sun,” while on what should be the next single To Keep and to Be Kept, a wry sense of humour shows through the deadpan – “and me, I’ve always been a country of one / since we met, border control’s all come undone.”
Reputation Amputation adds diversity to the album’s sound by showing Ladder’s rock'n’roll leanings, his howls adding credence to all those Nick Cave comparisons while an incredibly distorted guitar and almost dance-like beat brings to mind Marilyn Manson’s The Beautiful People.
The delicate Let Me Love You is a standout track and a gloriously understated love song, with Ladder’s vocals mixed to the front, the acoustic instrumentation sounding crisp and natural, not a synth to be found.
If you are not a fan of 1980s pop or are sick of bands with synthesisers and snare reverb – don’t be fooled. This is not a genre record, but a clever and rewarding album that should be making all the Best Australian Releases lists for 2014 in a few months. Highly recommended if you like: music.

The Afghan Whigs - Do the beast
Laut.de sieht es etwas anders:
So ist "Do To The Beast" die bisherige Krönung des ohnehin hochwertigen Schaffens der Whigs.
Throughout the album, Dulli seems to be treating the band’s own career in the same way he treats an old R&B record: as raw material for his current obsessions. As he nears 50, he’s able not only to play up the rough grain in his voice as he grasps for high notes on “Lost in the Woods”, but also to take in the breadth of his career to date. If his catalog is a car, he’s stripping it of its parts and refashioning something newer, more streetworthy. So Do to the Beast may not always sound like an Afghan Whigs album, but it operates like one, scavenging the darker corners of pop history to create something personal, vital, and urgent.
