There is a beating heart to Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds and at the center of that heart is a natural flow and warmth showcased on Push The Sky Away unlike any album to come before it.
The lustrous and almost organic style of Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds has been missing since 2008, but now with Push The Sky Away they’ve taken their soft-rock-bluesy-alternativish mashup and molded it into this brand new masterpiece.
The unseasoned Nick Cave listener might have a hard time avoiding boredom with Push The Sky Away or any Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds number for that matter, but for the connoisseurs this is a heavenly and long-awaited dreamscape of an album.
Mysterious most of the time, Push The Sky Away leaves much to the imagination. There are thematic suggestions with immense meaning that guide listeners, but Nick Cave leaves much of it open to listener interpretation.
Leading with the single “We No Who U R” codes a chilling realization of where we’ve started and where we’ve ended up, not only in our personal endeavours, but the progressive world as a whole. It’s a calm evaluation of the world today realizing the good that’s been done, but also the unintended missteps. Most of the album is uniform in this theme.
Other stories of love are told through “Higgs Boson Blues” and even stories of sorrow with the title track “Push The Sky Away” to end the short but powerful nine song run.
Nick Cave’s music is a sort of “slow down and think” experience, and a clear mind is necessary when delving into his elaborate ocean of thought. It seems every Nick Cave album could be a film of its own.
The music itself can make you question the meaning of life (“Higgs Boson Blues” & “Push The Sky Away”), but even more so with Nick’s emotion jerking lyrics. Nick takes the often overlooked little things and makes big ideas out of them, especially with the theme of Push The Sky Away.
It’s so reduced and plain, but comes with an unfamiliar addictive flavor that I can’t get enough of.
Made to order super deluxe box set. Contents encased in linen bound lift-off lid box as shown.
Ever wanted to know how a song comes about? The very special notebook in this bespoke box set is an anatomy of the album, song by song. The multitude of written notes are painstakingly reproduced, a detailed dissection of each song, an autopsy with a runaway scalpel; dozens of unused verses, alternate song titles, rants and screeds, embarrassing digressions, photographs, drawings and scribbles that in a sane world should never see the light of day. Here Nick gives the listener an unprecedented insight into the mania of the songwriting process.
