Oberhofer - Time Capsules II

The album is a swirling, contorting invention of sound and textures. The LP can veer quickly from twinkling piano into propulsive drumming and soaring guitar riffs, not forgetting the layers of xylophones and percussion. In the wrong hands all these elements could potentially have produced a record that is over complicated, however, Time Capsules II never appears cluttered or over cooked.
The themes of the record narrated by Oberhofer’s dulcet croon tend to document relationships and the frustration and joy of being connected to that special someone. The opener, ‘Heart’, contains a choice lyric which typifies the feeling of doomed love: ‘All that I asked for was a little bit of heart; I gave you my love and you tore it apart’. Later on in the record, ‘Haus’ tells the story of building a home and settling down into a private safe haven away from harm. ‘Away Frm U’ and ‘I Could Gopack an almighty punch with juggernaut like riffs while the former track boasts the frustrated lyric ofYoure pushing me away from you and there’s nothing I can do, and I can’t fight all your battles for you’.
A lot like Phoenix and Arcade Fire, Oberhofer expresses an intimate yet widescreen appeal. The music that
Oberhofer creates is optimistic and blissful while sounding colossal and the accompanying lyrics touch on
human subjects we can all relate to. Screw putting this one in the ground, everyone needs to hear this album!
