Ou Est Le Swimming Pool - The Golden Year

Ganz schlechte Nachrichten

Zu bieten hat das Album 12 Songs, darunter einige potentielle Hits, analoge Synthie-Sounds und jede Menge 80ies Referenzen, abzulesen in einigen Pet Shop Boys- ("These New Knights", "Jackson's Last Stand"), Depeche Mode- ("Better"), O.M.D.- ("The Key") , Yazoo- ("Outside") und Human League-Momenten ("Dance The Way I Feel").

In spite of anyone’s best efforts to separate The Golden Year from its background, it was always likely that there would be one or two moments where its context would result in moments more poignant than the band probably intended them to be. ‘Better’s occasional dark sentiments, although masked by an upbeat melody, make for pretty difficult listening: “The quiet walls are more help than a friend could be”. A similar effect is created by the waves of delicate hope which open up the album on ‘You Started’, particularly its “You have started the beginning of my life” refrain.

In the current climate, their mildly raved-up take on early-80s synth-pop is hardly unprecedented. But it's the tunes that count: epic but soulful and benefiting from Haddon's ability to cut through the glacially cool electronics with a raw, guileless vulnerability. "Jackson's Last Stand" and "Outside", in particular, achieve an exquisite balance between euphoria and melancholy.
