Engineers - Three Fact Fader

Ich möchte wetten, dass Simon Phipps, Mark Peters, Dan MacBean und Andrew Sweeney, alle mittlerweile zwischen 34 und 36 Jahre alt, mit ähnlicher Indiemusik musikalisch sozialisiert wurden wie wir und sich vermutlich ebenso im verhallten Sound zwischen Slowdive und Swervedriver, sowie Chapterhouse und Cocteau Twins verloren haben. Denn genau so klingt ihre Musik.

Die vier Jungs gründeten 2003 die Band Engineers, veröffentlichten 2005 ein gleichnamiges Soloalbum und begaben sich dann mit Ken Thomas ins Studio, um den Nachfolger aufzunehmen. Dass Thomas bereits mit Sigur Rós, M83 und Maps zusammenarbeitete, hört man „Three Fact Fader" dann auch an.
Selbstverständlich darf ein Song, der klingt als wäre er einem My Bloody Valentine Album entliehen, derzeit auf keinem guten Album fehlen (hier: „Emergency Room"). Auch The Jesus & Mary Chain („Sometimes I Realise"), Doves („Hang Your Head") und Pink Floyd („Be What You Are") schimmern gelegentlich durch den Wall of Sound.

Just when you think Engineers have reached the peak of their talents they go and push the envelope even further. If your knees don't go weak when 'The Fear Has Gone' finally explodes in a haze of guitars and guttural string cascades then you clearly have no soul. If Wagner was playing stadiums, he'd undoubtedly have a better lightshow than Bon Jovi, and he'd probably encore with this - it is simply astounding.

Three Fact Fader is a massively assured record from a band who clearly know exactly what they want and how to achieve it. This could be one of the best records you'll hear this year.

Trying to catch music with words is always like trying to lasso jelly, but with music as layered, slippery and fluid as this it's near impossible. At its best, Three Fact Fader is like an ocean: full of half-submerged electronica, warm washes of distorted guitar and sucking rhythmic currents, Simon Phipp's vocals floating hazily on top.
